A 31-year-old man, Unathi Ndabemfene, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a 28-year-old woman in White City, Embalenhle.
The Embalenhle South African Police Service (SAPS) welcomed the conclusion of the case after Ndabemfene was convicted of murder by the Delmas High Court and sentenced at the Breyten Magistrate’s Court on 12 August 2026.
The murder dates back to 30 May 2024, when the victim was found dead inside a room in the White City area of Embalenhle. Police officers who responded to the scene observed that there were no apparent signs of forced entry.
A subsequent examination of the victim revealed injuries consistent with strangulation, prompting investigators to pursue the circumstances surrounding her death as a murder investigation.
Through sustained investigative efforts, police identified Ndabemfene as a suspect in the case. Investigators later established that he had fled to the Western Cape following the incident.
The investigating team continued efforts to locate him, eventually tracing and arresting him in the Western Cape. He was subsequently charged and brought before the court to face the allegations against him.
Following the presentation of evidence during the trial, the court found Ndabemfene guilty of murder. He was handed a life sentence, bringing the lengthy investigation and court proceedings to a conclusion.
In addition to the prison sentence, Ndabemfene was declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of the applicable legislation.
Embalenhle SAPS management praised the investigating officers whose work helped bring the case to a successful conclusion. Particular recognition was given to Detective Captain Fannie Sindane, who took over the investigation after Detective Captain Melusi Mthombeni was promoted and transferred to Kwaggafontein.
Despite his transfer, Captain Mthombeni’s earlier work on the investigation was acknowledged as having made an important contribution towards building the case and pursuing justice for the victim and her family.
Captain Sindane was also commended for taking over the investigation and continuing the work with determination and professionalism until the matter reached its conclusion in court.
The station commander further praised both detectives for their dedication and commitment to ensuring that serious offenders are held accountable for their actions.
Police also acknowledged the cooperation and support of other role players who assisted during the investigation and contributed to the successful prosecution of the case.
The life sentence comes amid continued efforts by law enforcement agencies in South Africa to address murder and gender-based violence. Police said the outcome sends a strong message that individuals responsible for serious violent crimes will face the full force of the law.
SAPS reiterated its commitment to combating serious and violent crime while working with communities and other stakeholders to promote safer communities across South Africa.
For the victim’s family, the conviction and sentence bring a measure of justice following a case that began with her death more than two years ago. The successful prosecution also highlights the importance of sustained police investigations in ensuring that suspects are traced and brought before the courts, even when they attempt to flee from the area where an alleged crime was committed.
