Six people have sustained injuries after a Toyota Corolla plunged into the Birim River at Biremso along the Accra–Kumasi Highway.
The accident occurred on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, near Anyinasin Junction, leaving the vehicle severely damaged and its six occupants injured. Fortunately, no deaths were recorded in the incident.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), its Bunso Fire Station received a distress call concerning the accident at about 9:04 a.m. A rescue crew was subsequently dispatched to the scene to assist the occupants and assess the situation.
An eyewitness told fire officers that he heard a loud crash and immediately rushed towards the area to find a black Toyota Corolla submerged in the Birim River.
By the time the firefighters arrived, members of the public had already taken action to rescue the occupants from the damaged vehicle.
The six occupants, all males, were successfully removed from the vehicle and transported to Hawa Saviour Memorial Hospital, where they received medical attention for injuries sustained during the crash.
The vehicle, which reportedly bore registration number GR 1425-18, was completely damaged following the incident. Some personal belongings belonging to the occupants were also recovered from the wreckage.
The circumstances that caused the vehicle to leave the highway and plunge into the river have not yet been established. Authorities are investigating the accident to determine what led to the crash.
The incident has once again drawn attention to road safety along the Accra–Kumasi Highway, one of Ghana’s major transport routes. The highway carries significant traffic between the country’s capital and major towns in the Ashanti Region and beyond.
