Two teachers of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (Obuasi SecTech) in the Ashanti Region have been arrested over their alleged involvement in an attack on the school’s headmaster, Abdulai Zakaria.
The development follows a violent incident on the school campus on August 5, 2026, during which the headmaster was allegedly attacked by students and sustained machete injuries. He was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.
According to the police, the two teachers are suspected of instigating students to attack the headmaster following tensions that had developed on the school campus.
The Obuasi District Police Commander, Superintendent Mahama Iddrisu, previously disclosed that three teachers were initially picked up for questioning after the headmaster lodged a formal complaint with the police. Investigators subsequently focused on two of them after taking statements from the teachers and the headmaster.
The two teachers were identified in court as Kwasi Brefo, 41, and Joseph Appiah Arthur, 34. They have been charged with two counts of abetment under Ghana’s Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960.
The prosecution alleges that the teachers aided and abetted students to cause unlawful damage to property belonging to the school. They are also accused of encouraging students to attack the headmaster during the August 4 incident.
The two appeared before the Obuasi Circuit Court on Tuesday, August 11, where the court remanded them into police custody for one week. They are expected to return to court on August 17, 2026, while police continue their investigations.
The case emerged from a wider dispute at the school after students reportedly accused the headmaster of involvement in alleged ritual activities on campus. There were also allegations concerning inappropriate relationships with female students. Police have stressed that these allegations remain subject to investigation and have not been established as facts.
One of the issues at the centre of the controversy is the discovery of a male foetus on the school grounds. Police said the foetus was exhumed from an area some distance from one of the school’s dormitories on August 5.
According to Superintendent Iddrisu, the foetus has been taken to the Obuasi Government Hospital morgue, where it is being preserved pending an autopsy and possible DNA examination.
Police have also cautioned against drawing conclusions about who may have buried the foetus. The District Commander said there was no evidence or eyewitness account establishing that the headmaster was responsible for the burial.
Investigators hope that the planned post-mortem examination and, if possible, DNA testing will help establish the circumstances surrounding the discovery and potentially identify the person or persons responsible.
The allegations surrounding the foetus reportedly contributed to tensions that eventually resulted in the confrontation with the headmaster. Police are now investigating both the alleged assault and the events that preceded it.
The arrest of the two teachers marks another development in the case, which has already attracted significant public attention because of the allegations involving students, school authorities and the discovery of the foetus.
Authorities are expected to continue interviewing witnesses and examining evidence as they seek to establish exactly what happened on the school campus and determine the individual responsibilities of those involved.
For now, the two teachers remain in police custody pending their next court appearance, while the investigation continues.
The case also highlights concerns over maintaining discipline and security in Ghanaian second-cycle institutions, particularly when disputes between students and school authorities escalate into violence.
