Suspected Phone Thief Beaten, Forced to Carry Heavy Stones at Circle Bus Stop

A young man suspected of stealing a mobile phone from a passenger aboard a commercial vehicle has reportedly been beaten and subjected to an unusual punishment by an angry crowd at Circle in Accra.

The incident, which occurred at the PTC Bus Stop on Saturday, November 7, 2026, attracted attention after videos showing the suspect carrying heavy stones surfaced on social media.

According to reports, the young man, who reportedly identified himself as a painter, was accused of snatching a passenger’s mobile phone while travelling in a trotro.

The suspect allegedly removed the phone’s protective case and threw it away in an apparent attempt to avoid being caught. However, his actions reportedly attracted the attention of some passengers and bystanders, who confronted him over the missing device.

The young man initially denied stealing the phone when questioned by the angry crowd. However, a subsequent search allegedly led to the recovery of the missing device in his possession.

The phone was reportedly returned to its rightful owner after the confrontation.

What followed was a chaotic scene as some members of the crowd allegedly descended on the suspect, subjecting him to physical assault over the suspected theft.

In addition to the beating, the young man was reportedly forced to carry heavy stones as punishment for his alleged actions.

Videos from the incident, which were shared on social media, showed the suspect carrying the stones while members of the crowd gathered around him.

Some individuals at the scene reportedly livestreamed the incident on TikTok, allowing the confrontation to reach a wider online audience.

The suspect was also reportedly made to confess publicly and promise not to engage in stealing activities at the location again.

The incident has generated conversations about the growing frustration among some residents and commercial vehicle passengers over phone theft and other forms of petty crime in busy transport terminals.

Circle remains one of Accra’s busiest commercial and transportation centres, attracting large numbers of commuters, traders and commercial drivers daily. The heavy human traffic in the area has also made it a location where passengers must remain alert to possible theft and other criminal activities.

However, while residents and commuters have expressed frustration over suspected criminal activities, the use of mob violence and public humiliation raises serious concerns about the dangers of taking the law into one’s own hands.

Suspected offenders are entitled to due process, and allegations of theft should be handled by the appropriate law enforcement authorities rather than through physical punishment by members of the public.

According to the reports, the suspect had not been handed over to the police at the time the incident was reported.

It remains unclear whether any formal complaint was subsequently lodged or whether the suspect was later arrested.

The incident serves as another reminder of the need for vigilance among commuters while highlighting the importance of reporting suspected criminal activities to the police instead of resorting to mob justice.
