Stonebwoy sells ‘sobolo’ in style
The reggae/dancehall musician is getting plaudits for his performance on ‘Sobolo’ – a sip of organic Ghanaian music eulogy.
The five-minute highlife piece, recorded live, is a love song which features The Bhim Band.
At the opening of the song, Stonebwoy’s trait as a dangerous vocal percussionist is evident. His first tone were the usual non-lexical vocables that became famous in most of his live shows. Remarkably intriguing yet nonsensical vocals that fluffed intentionally to showcase the vocal instrument of the fine Ghanaian award-winning performer.
The band was in control. The Bhim Band has tested this particular concept before and nailing it this time with sobolo was an understatement. A music well recorded live!
Stonebwoy’s ability to synchronise with different rhythms to hijack a fine harmony in the sobolo mix will forever be extolled by music experts.
For a few strands, it felt like a pre-colonial top palmwine band ensemble, and for an urban Afro dancehall singer, that’s a crazy vocal achievement.
What is more refreshing is Stonebwoy’s decision to give legend musician Dr. Paa Bobo props having taken inspiration from the deceased’s ‘Osobrokye’ song.
That’s not all. Stonebwoy sends a message to the world on Highlife being the root of afrobeats.
“Sweet sweet highlife music from the coast of Ghana. Highlife music is the originator, the origination and the foundation of the afrobeats music we have today. This one is taken from the classical archives of the great one Dr Paa Bobo,” he sang.
