Sports Check with John Laryea: From dropping out of school to becoming a Ghanaian boxing star

John Laryea is a rising Ghanaian boxing star who has gained recognition following his triumph over Nicaraguan boxer Alexander Mejia in the United States of America.

The bout, held on November 1, 2024, at Caribe Royale Orlando, marked his first international fight, and he rose to the occasion, securing a unanimous decision victory.

With this win, the James Town-based boxer now boasts an impressive professional record of 15 fights: 14 wins, including 11 by knockout, and 1 draw.

On this episode of GhanaWeb’s Sports Check, host Emmanuel Enin sat down with the two-time WBO African Featherweight champion to discuss his journey so far.

Reflecting on the challenges of his young career, Laryea revealed that he left home at the age of nine to pursue his dream of becoming a boxer.

He expressed gratitude to his trainer, Lawrence Carl Lokko, and his manager, Samuel Anim Addo, for their unwavering support and investment in his career.

Laryea also spoke about his boxing idols and shared how his recent international victory has earned him the full support of his parents.
