Speed up probe into aircraft engineer’s death – Court to Police
Koforidua Magistrate Court has denied an application of bail for the five accused persons arrested in connection with the alleged murder of the Africa World Airline engineer, Prince Kwabena Kumi.
The suspects, Ebenezer Asante, Okyere Emmanuel, Samuel Peprah, Konadu Frank and Okyere Kwabena Emmanuel, were picked up by men from the regional Criminal Investigations Department in April 2018 after the body of the aircraft engineer was retrieved in a bush between Akroso and Akyem Asuboa in the Eastern Region.
The presiding judge, His Worship, Mr Eric Daning before remanding the accused persons expressed displeasure with how investigators who are in charge of the case were handling their investigations.
According to Mr Eric Daning confining the accused persons for so long is against the fundamental human rights of the accused persons as they have not been charged with any offence yet.
The judge made this statement when the prosecutor Lawyer Dickson Donkor prayed the court to adjourn the case to a later date as the Attorney General’s department awaits the ballistic report from the ballistic unit of the Ghana Police.
Lawyer of the accused persons Mr Nyadu-Dor who prayed the court for bail for his clients who have been in custody since April said his clients would not jump bail if granted because the charges against his clients were bailable according to the laws of this country.
He further argued that the fifth accused person, Okyere Kwabena Emmanuel a final year student who was granted bail by the court to take part in the just ended West African Senior High School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) and collaborated with the police and did not jump bail.
But the judge, however, refused the bail because a full-scale investigation is yet to be conducted by the police and then remanded the accused persons into prison custody to appear on June 14th while police speed up their investigations.
