Residents of the Gyetiase and Tadiaso farming communities have decried the government’s constant neglect regarding the deplorable state of their roads.
They have warned that they will boycott the upcoming December polls and prevent elections from being held in the communities if immediate attention is not given to their roads.
In a bid to voice their concerns to the government, residents from communities within the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region took to the streets in large numbers to protest against the poor road network, which has become a stumbling block, making it difficult for them to go about their daily activities.
Highlighting the major challenges caused by the poor road network, residents lamented their inability to access healthcare in neighboring towns, as reported by citinewsroom.com.
According to the protesters, teachers and healthcare workers often decline postings to their communities, citing the poor state of the roads as a major reason—an issue they believe requires immediate attention.
Prince Dwomoh, one of the leaders of the protesters, speaking to Channel One News explained that they have also informed local leaders, including the District Chief Executive, Member of Parliament, and Assembly Member yet no action has been taken.
“What we are saying is that the people of Gyetiase and communities are tired of bad roads. Our roads have been unconstructed and untilled since Ghana’s independence in 1957, so we are tired, we have had to put up with bad roads all this while,” he said.
Prince Dwomoh stated that their community appears to have been sidelined under the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), which aims to reconstruct poor roads in local communities.
“We are all in this country and we are well aware of a number of roads being constructed by the government of Ghana. In fact, we praised the government for a lot of developmental projects being carried out by the government.
“That is what we are saying, so the government should come to our aid and construct our road for us. Other than that we shall not take part in the 2024.
“All the top people there, the DCE, the MP, the assembly member they are all well aware of our situation so we have informed them,” he is quoted as saying by citinewsroom.com.
