Skin bleaching causes kidney disease – Prof. Akosah reveals
A former president of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and Director General for the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Prof. Agyemang Badu Akosah has revealed skin bleaching can cause kidney failure.
He explained that, the toxic chemicals in the bleaching creams go into the blood to affect the kidney.
Prof Akosah said this while speaking at the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the 1998 Class of the University of Ghana Medical School.
He noted that, the African black colour is good for the tropical weather thus attempt by the women to bleach their skin only exposes them to skin cancer and other related diseases.
“God made our skin dark to protect us from the scorching sun but people want to become fair at all cost” he bemoaned.
Prof. Akosa told Adom FM’s Felix Anim-Appau that, the young ladies who have started bleaching have signed a kidney destruction contract with the chemicals in the creams they use.
He disclosed that, the dialysis units of hospitals are filled to capacity due to the increasing skin bleaching among young women.
Prof. Akosah advised young women to be content with their God-given skin colour to avoid premature deaths.
Meanwhile, the Head of Public Health at the University of Ghana Hospital, Dr. Philip Amoo has also advised the Health Ministry to carry their health screening exercises to the churches, mosques and at other social gatherings to detect such diseases early since many people do not have money to go for checkups.
