The Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has asked TEWU-TUC to refrain from commenting on its indefinite strike action.
The strike, which took effect on July 3 following a seven-day ultimatum that expired on June 24, 2025, centres on TEWU-GH’s demand for representation on the governing councils of traditional public universities.
TEWU-TUC has since described the strike as unlawful, insisting it is not only unjustified but also a clear violation of existing labour laws and union protocols.
However, in an interview on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem, the Chairman of TEWU-GH, Abdul-Rahman Sulemana, slammed TEWU-TUC, stating the comment is misplaced.
Mr. Sulemana noted that it was not in TEWU-TUC’s place to describe a strike as lawful or unlawful, questioning if it was now taking over the job of the National Labour Commission (NLC).
“Is TEWU-TUC now the National Labour Commission in charge of labour issues to determine a lawful and unlawful strike? They should shut up and sit down somewhere. They are only making noise. They have no locus at all. Who are they advising? they should advise themselves.
“They must let Ghanaians know that they have a majority of representation in GES but not in the public universities and should leave them to concentrate on their issues. How will a pre-tertiary union be presiding over issues regarding the tertiary unions? Is it the National Labour Commission? No, so what are they talking about?” he slammed.
