Shelter, school for street children coming – Bawumia

Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has said the government has secured a piece of land to build a shelter and school for street children in the national capital.

“Land has been provided by the government through the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for the construction of accommodation and a school for street children,” Dr Bawumia said when he joined The Christ the King Church for its 4th-anniversary soup kitchen, which is an intervention initiated by the Parish Priest of The Christ the King Church, Rev. Fr. Andrew Campbell and supported by the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC).

The church has, for the last four years, provided free breakfast, clothes, toiletries and skills development for street children and also created a sense of belonging for them in Accra.

Dr Bawumia expressed his appreciation to the benefactors of the street children and pleaded with others to support, too.

The Vice-President also noted that it is important for all street children and the homeless to obtain the Ghana card, hence, a special arrangement would be put in place for the National Identification Authority (NIA) to issue cards to them so they do not miss out.

Dr Bawumia reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continue providing skills training to street children so they can earn a living, find their feet and eventually leave the streets.
