‘She was abused on social media when she started music’ – Amaarae’s mother recounts

Ama Bawuah, the mother of Ghanaian-American singer, Amaarae, has shared the traumatic incident her daughter faced at the beginning of her career.

In an interview on the “Diva Doc” podcast, Ama Bawuah noted that her daughter was heavily abused on social media by Ghanaians.

She explained that the harsh comments directed at her daughter stemmed from spite, as some netizens believed Amaarae came from a wealthy family.

“When Amaarae started her music career, I remember some of the Ghanaian kids on social media were really tough on her. Some of them were saying she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and she has wealthy parents,” she said.

Recounting the challenges they faced as parents, Ama Bawuah shared that when they first arrived in the United States, she and her husband couldn’t even afford to sleep in the same bed due to financial constraints.

“When we first went to the US, myself, Amaarae, and Papa were sleeping on one double-size bed. As a child, she never asked for a doll. It was all about the keyboard, a microphone, and a guitar,” she shared.

Amaarae’s mother also shared how supportive she has been so far as her daughter’s career is concerned.

“One time I remember she pulled up a show in Spintex and I had to invite all my friends to go and support her, I paid for all of that. I also remember her first radio interview. I had all of my family listening to her.

“I am that kind of mother that would go ten toes deep for my children. I remember I used to tell her that if she wanted to do music, she should learn the business side of it… I always say that failure was never an option,” she added.
