You are officially waking up today in a world where the ANC is no longer (entirely) in charge, but Cyril Ramaphosa has regained his presidency. From now on, appointments will need to be discussed with their GNU partners, and hopefully things will be done by the book. I could rattle on about the GNU and you, but our excellent team has got your back far better than I can do on my lonesome. Marianne Merten writes about Ramaphosa’s late night presidency vote, and how the longest day in our political lives came to a productive end. Rebecca Davis has your 101 on the details of the GNU, and what the DA’s role in it will be. Read on here. What of the EFF? Velani Ludidi explains how, according to Malema, their days of parliamentary truants and troublemakers are apparently over. And finally, Queenin Masuabi writes on why the DA chose – at the last minute, literally – to make a GNU deal with the ANC. The elections and negotiations could have ended in a fearful, volatile struggle for power. In many other countries, the ruling party’s demise is matched with the end of that political system, often violently. As Stephen Grootes pointed out, the ANC has at least given us all a crucial precedent: that even if you rule for decades uncontested, peaceful transition out of that dominance is expected now, not hoped for.
