Sammy Gyamfi shares gun registration details of Naa Koryoo

The National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the Ghana Police Service and the ruling New Patriotic Party of colluding to illegally determine his party’s parliamentary candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, who was re-arrested for a gun found in her vehicle.

In a statement shared on social media on Saturday, June 8, 2024, the NDC communication officer indicated that Naa Koryoo has now been detained because of a supposed inconsistency in her gun registration license for the gun found in her car.

He said that the allegation that there is a discrepancy in the name of the NDC parliamentary candidate is false.

“Comrades, it is very clear that the NPP-controlled Police Service has no reasonable or justifiable cause to be detaining the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency.

“The claim of a discrepancy in her first name is totally false,” Sammy Gyamfi wrote on X.

He shared documents of Naa Koryoo including her Ghana Card and her gun registration permit and license.

The Ghana Card, her poster, and all the other documents but for the ‘License to Bear Firearms Other Than A Flint-lock Gun or Cap Gun’ bore the name ‘Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor’.

The license had the name “Phillis Naa Koryo Okunor” with the “Koryoo” in the other documents spelled with one ‘o’.

He asked what crime the parliamentary candidate had now been detained for because she had every right to own a gun for her protection.

He also accused the police of being biased because Naa Koryoo’s contender, NPP’s Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and Minister for Fisheries, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has actually fired a gun in public but nothing was done to her.

“What then is Naa Koryoo’s crime? Is it now a crime to procure and register/license a gun in your name for personal protection? A gun she has not fired at anybody? What did the NPP-controlled police do in the case of Hawa Koomson, who actually fired a gun at a voter registration center?” he quizzed.

He added, “This same Hawa Koomson has threatened Naa Koryoo at gunpoint on four (4) different occasions, according to her lawyers. This is why she was compelled to buy and register a gun in her name for her protection.”
