Rwanda woman sentence to 2-years imprisonment over indecent dressing

In this twenty first century, western clothing styles adopted by young people have been a powerful influence on the African youths.

Youths engage in the social phenomena of indecent clothing called fashion. For example, manufacturers, retailers, and advertisers increasingly target teenage fashions especially girls to sell their products.

It simply refers to exposing one’s body to the public on purpose. In actuality, the practice does not adhere to the social norms and values, especially in African society.

Mugabekazi Lilliane, 24 was detained and charged with public indecency for showing too much skin while attending a performance by popular French musician Tayc in Kigali on August 9, 2022.

Following her arrest, she was remanded in jail as she waited to hear her fate in court.

“She is suspected to have committed public indecency,” the spokesman for the prosecution, Faustin Nkusi, told AFP, following her arrest.

News of the arrest sparked outrage, but Rwandan government officials, including former justice minister Johnston Busingye, backed the move.
