Recurring Accra Floods: Relocate Ghana’s capital – Odike advocates

The founder and leader of the United Progressive People’s Party (UPP), Mr. Akwasi Addai Odike wants Ghana’s capital be relocated from Accra following perennial  floods in some parts of the capital that keeps claiming lives.

According him, if any government wants to solve the flooding in Accra, it must  consider having the  political will to make a non-coastal city the capital instead of current Accra.

“Togo, Ivory Coast and other neighbouring countries have done that and Ghana can follow suit”, Mr. Akwasi Addai Odike spoke on Nhyira FM’s morning showMyNewsGh.com monitored.

“We need government with political will to do this”, the 2016 UPP flagbearer pointed out to host of ‘Kro Yimu Nsem’ political talk Show, Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin.

Five people have been confirmed dead following about a 3-hour long downpour last Sunday.

According to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), four of the bodies were retrieved at Adjei Kojo in Ashaiman, and another one at Odorna.

The Public Relations Officer of NADMO, George Awusi, said the body of a six-year-old who was believed to have been swept away by the flood waters at Sowutuom is yet to be retrieved.

“We are still searching for the child’s body. At Circle Odorna, two people drowned and one body has been found. It is actually about 5 people that are confirmed dead. Where the Army pickup fell, another body was found aside the three people in the bucket of the pickup,” he said.
