Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti facing four-year prison sentence over tax evasion allegations

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is facing a possible four-year prison sentence as he prepares to stand trial over tax evasion allegations.

The Italian coach is accused of deliberately misinforming the tax authorities during his first spell with the Spanish club between 2014 and 2015, allegedly avoiding the payment of more than 1 million euros in income tax.

However, Ancelotti has denied any wrongdoing and pledged to contest the charges, despite previously admitting to underpaying taxes, an issue he attributed to errors made by his accountants.

The court has scheduled the trial for April 2, 2025, to determine the coach’s fate regarding the allegations.

Speaking ahead of Real Madrid’s La Liga match against Leganés on March 28, 2025, Ancelotti stated that he is prepared to testify in court and remains hopeful of being exonerated.

“Alleged tax fraud? I have to go and testify next week. This is not the place to debate this. What’s happening next week is an appeal by the Prosecutor’s Office because there has already been a first trial that I won,” he said.

Meanwhile, prosecutors have called for Ancelotti to be sentenced to four years in prison if found guilty of the charges.

The trial will take place just six days before Real Madrid travel to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on April 8, 2025.
