President Nana Akufo-Addo has condemned the conduct of the policeman who assaulted a woman at a branch of Midland Savings and Loans in Accra adding he supports any punitive measures by Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu, against the culprit.

The victim, Patience Safo, was ruthlessly assaulted by Frederick Amanor also known as Skalla, while holding a baby.

She had insisted on withdrawing a sum of GHS270 from the facility as her previous attempts to withdraw the money days back had failed due to a network challenge.

The officer who was servicing as a security at the financial institution was called to escort her out but ended up beating her in the process.

Commenting on the development on Saturday, 21 July 2018, during a visit to the Palace of the Overlord of Mamprugu, Mr Akufo-Addo stated that: “Policemen are meant to protect citizens and not to assault citizens. The measures that the IGP has taken to sanction the erring policemen, and to make sure these things don’t happen again, have my complete support”.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has disclosed that No. 50260 Lance Corporal Godzi Frederick Amanor, has been interdicted and being processed for court.

A statement by the police on Saturday, 21 July 2018, said “the uniform and all other police accoutrements” have been taken away from the police officer in question “pending internal disciplinary proceedings”.

In a post on their Facebook Wall, the police further assured that all those found culpable in the case will be punished as investigations “commence into the conduct of officials of the Midland Savings and Loans Limited” where the incident occurred.

The development has attracted widespread condemnation by the public with several comments indicating that the police officer and the bank should be sanctioned.
