PSG win record-extending 13th Ligue 1 title

Paris Saint-Germain have won their fourth successive Ligue 1 title after defeating Angers 1-0 on Saturday — continuing their unbeaten league season.

The victory at Parc des Princes left PSG with an insurmountable 24-point lead over second place Monaco, who play Brest later on Saturday, and ensured they retained the title with six league games remaining.

Luis Enrique’s side are yet to lose in Ligue 1 this season, having won 23 and drawn five of their 28 matches. Should PSG avoid defeat in their final six league matches, they would become the first team in the history of France’s top division to go an entire league campaign unbeaten.

PSG’s league title is their 11th in 13 seasons and continues their dominance of French football since Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) purchased the club in 2011.

It is the club’s 13th league title in total, putting them three clear of both Marseille and Saint-Etienne.

The title is a second in a row for head coach Luis Enrique, who has played an important role in reshaping PSG’s squad since his appointment in the summer of 2023, bringing in a number of young players as part of a new strategic vision under the former Spain head coach and sporting director Luis Campos.

Lionel Messi, Neymar and Sergio Ramos departed ahead of Luis Enrique’s first season in charge, and talisman Kylian Mbappe moved to Real Madrid last summer. The French side recruited Joao Neves, Desire Doue and Willian Pacho, who are all under the age of 23, in the summer of 2024, while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia joined in January. Luis Enrique signed a new contract through to 2027 in February.

PSG remain in contention for further silverware before the season is out. They face Aston Villa in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday, and progressed to the final of the Coupe de France last Tuesday after coming from behind to beat second tier USL Dunkerque.
