Prisoners, warders smuggling wee into prisons-Prison Service admits

Prisoners in the country’s prisons have been accused of smuggling marijuana into prisons with the connivance of officers who despite strict laws are neck-deep in trading in the substance for monetary gains.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Kumasi Central Prisons DSP Richard Bukari,  who was questioned on Kumasi-based Angel FM in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com as to how inmates get the contraband goods into the yard they smoke with impunity prisoners get access to the substance when they step out to work admitted some warders and the prisoners themselves engage in the act.

“It is not openly sold in the prisons. Sometimes we find wee in the yard and they use several methods in smuggling wee into the prison”, he revealed.

According to him, some criminally-minded officers have gained notoriety in selling wee to the prisoners and have been fished out and sanctioned accordingly.

“Some of the officers are not of good behavior. We have arrested some officers who have made attempts to sell the substance to inmates. We have conducted investigations and unraveled these unprofessional officers some of whom have been sacked from the service and others on interdiction”, he disclosed.

He wondered how much prisoners have to force them to convince them to bring wee into the yard to sell to them warning that those engaging in such acts would not be spared as the code of conduct of the service frowns against such practices.

In March this year, MyNewsGh.com reported an account of Mr Issah Alhassan who said it was needless jailing persons for drug-related offenses when the prisons are the marketplace for these substances.

The ex-convict, therefore, advised security agencies to stop worrying themselves about jailing wee smokers, because by jailing them, they are sending them to the world market of wee to smoke to their fill.

According to Issah Alhassan, those serving various jail terms for drug use live the same lifestyles within their terms of incarceration because they get the substance to buy at will.

“Access to wee in prison is just the same as someone who freely walks on the street and I do not understand the judgment of some of our judges”, he wondered.

In his opinion, a judge who sentences a convict for smoking weed is just aiding him to have full access to it even in the prison because the substance is readily available on demand by the inmates.

“Somebody who was jailed for smoking one roll is now enjoying more rolls in the prison”. He told Angel Fm in an exclusive interview with Fancy Dimaria on Angel Drive last Friday which was monitored by MyNewsGh.com.
