Press Prosecutor, Liar and Undemocratic AG: Five shots fired at AG by Adu-Boahene’s lawyers

The legal representatives of embattled former National Signal Bureau Director, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, have criticized the Attorney-General (AG), Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, accusing him of bias, dishonesty, and undermining democratic principles.

The legal team, led by Samuel Atta Akyea of Zoe, Akyea & Co., described the AG’s recent press briefing as a calculated move to prejudice public opinion against their clients.

In a statement on March 24, 2025, Atta Akyea criticized the AG for pronouncing his clients guilty in the “court of public opinion” while their case was still under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

He condemned what he described as a reckless attempt to turn the justice system into a political weapon, arguing that suspects must be treated with dignity until due process determines their guilt or innocence.

Here is a list of five shots fired at AG by Adu-Boahene’s lawyers

AG branded a liar over an economy flight allegation

The legal team also took issue with what they termed the Attorney-General’s falsehood regarding Adu-Boahene’s return to Ghana.

The AG had allegedly claimed that Adu-Boahene flew economy class in an attempt to disguise himself. However, his lawyers insist that he flew business class, a fact they say is easily verifiable.

“On Thursday, the 20th day of March 2025, Mr. Kwabena Adu-Boahene arrived at Kotoka International Airport on a British Airways flight from the United Kingdom. It is totally false that he flew economy class to disguise himself as the Attorney-General was strenuously projecting it to be. Our client was in the business class, an easily verifiable fact,” the lawyers asserted.

Undemocratic tactics and public trial condemned

Further lambasting the AG, the lawyers accused him of acting in an undemocratic manner by making public pronouncements on an ongoing investigation.

“The Attorney-General is behaving like a press prosecutor rather than a legal professional. Instead of gathering evidence to prosecute in a court of law, he is instigating the public against our clients through propaganda. This is an abuse of his office and an attack on democratic principles,” the statement added.

The lawyers argued that a fair judicial process demands that suspects be tried in court, not in the media. They expressed concerns that the AG’s conduct has created an environment where their clients are presumed guilty before trial, which they believe is a dangerous precedent.

Illegal detention and violation of rights

The legal team also revealed that Adu-Boahene and his wife, Angela, have been unlawfully detained beyond the constitutionally mandated 48-hour limit.

They claimed that EOCO not only denied them access to legal counsel but also attempted to monitor privileged lawyer-client communications, an action they described as an egregious violation of fundamental rights.

“This morning, our clients were denied their right to confidential legal counsel. We were only allowed to speak to them in the presence of EOCO officials. This is a blatant abuse of power and a clear indication that democracy is under siege,” Atta Akyea fumed.

A calculated political agenda?

The statement suggested that the AG’s actions are politically motivated, accusing him of trying to vilify Adu-Boahene and Angela Boateng to serve a larger political agenda.

The legal team argued that the government’s goal is to create a negative public perception, so that even if the courts ultimately find their clients innocent, the damage to their reputation would already be done.

“We are seeing through this grand agenda, smear our clients in the eyes of the public, so that if the court dismisses the case due to lack of evidence, the AG can still claim political victimhood and blame the judiciary. This is nothing short of persecution,” they asserted.

Legal battle ahead

Despite what they described as a blatant attack on due process, the lawyers vowed to fight relentlessly for justice.

“We will not be intimidated by these tactics. We will pursue justice for our clients, no matter how long it takes. The rule of law cannot be redefined to suit political whims.”
