President John Dramani Mahama has issued an order to complete the abandoned Anomabu Fisheries College.
He has thus directed the Fisheries Minister to collaborate with the Finance Minister to secure the necessary funding to complete the project.
The project began in 2011 under the then-National Democratic Congress (NDC) government but was halted after former President Akufo-Addo’s administration assumed power.
If completed, the college will include lecture halls, a principal’s bungalow, fish ponds, and water facilities capable of training 300 students in sustainable fishing and aquaculture practices.
The president expressed concern about several other projects abandoned by the previous government, assuring Ghanaians that his administration will seek funding to complete all abandoned and unfinished projects by the previous government.
It will be recalled that during his vetting, the fisheries minister assured Ghanaians that the college would be completed and made operational.
On January 22, 2025, he appeared before the Vetting Committee and stated that it was critical to improve fisherfolk knowledge by providing fishing communities with training and capacity-building opportunities.
She was optimistic that it would aid in improving the capacity of those in the fishing industry.
“That, it was under I Emelia Arthur that the long-awaited Fisheries College that we started in 2013 in Anomabo became operational. The Indigenous part is very important to me because of our fisher’s knowledge,” she said.
