Police reveal how 16-year-old SHS student accidentally shot his classmate at ADASS

The Ashanti Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has disclosed that a 16-year-old student of Adventist Senior High School (ADASS) brought his father’s pistol to campus, leading to an accidental shooting that injured his classmate on April 4, 2025.

According to the police report, the student brought his father’s loaded pistol to school to showcase it to his classmates.

While the group was examining the weapon, it accidentally discharged, striking one of the students and causing injuries.

In a statement released on April 5, 2025, the police indicated that the injured student is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

“Preliminary investigations reveal that a 16-year-old second-year student (name withheld) brought a locally manufactured pistol loaded with one BB round to school. The student allegedly attempted to show the firearm to a classmate. During the exchange, the weapon accidentally discharged, injuring another student.

“All names of those involved are being withheld. The injured student has since been treated at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and is currently in stable condition. The juvenile suspect has been arrested, and the empty cartridge has been recovered and retained as evidence,” portions of the statement read.

The police further noted that the firearm was taken without parental consent, and efforts are underway to locate the suspect’s father to aid the ongoing investigation.

“During questioning, the suspect stated that he took the weapon from his father’s bedroom without his father’s knowledge. Authorities are actively working to locate and arrest the father to assist with the investigation,” the statement added.
