Police caution public against unlawful use of firearms at events

The Accra Regional Police Command has issued a strong warning against the unlawful discharge of firearms during public and cultural gatherings, describing it as a dangerous practice that endangers lives and public safety.
At a press briefing in Accra, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the command, condemned the growing trend and cautioned that offenders would face severe legal consequences.
“We strongly condemn the reckless and unlawful use of firearms at public and cultural events, which poses a grave risk to lives and public safety,” she stated.
Superintendent Obeng reminded the public that possessing and discharging firearms without lawful authority is a criminal offence, urging strict adherence to the law.
“Those found flouting the law will be dealt with accordingly,” she warned.
Her remarks follow the tragic death of Fatima, a second-year student at Bimbilla Senior High School, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet during the Fire Festival in Bimbilla on July 6. The incident occurred as festival-goers processed from the regent’s palace to Wampu Dam for traditional rituals.
The Police noted a troubling rise in the use of sophisticated firearms and live ammunition during such celebrations.
The command is urging the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and report any illegal firearm activity to ensure peaceful and safe festivities.
