PHOTOS: Rainstorm renders many homeless at Garkuon

A brief but intense rainstorm lasting just 30 minutes has left many residents of Garkuon, a farming community in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region, homeless.

The storm, which struck around 10pm on Saturday, ripped off roofs and caused widespread destruction to properties.

According to residents, several structures were destroyed, including homes belonging to vulnerable individuals such as widows.

A resident, Lewaah Dari, who recounted the incident, said they were asleep when the storm began. She narrated how the screams of a neighbour calling for help led them to the collapsed room of an elderly woman. Fortunately, the woman was rescued in time.

“On our way back, we saw roofing sheets being carried away by the wind,” she added, appealing to government and NGOs to come to their aid, especially as more than 10 widows have been left without shelter.

Meanwhile, a Roman Catholic catechist, Samuel Diporo, who had visited the community for worship, expressed shock at the level of destruction. He noted that when he arrived, only furniture remained in place, with church members absent due to the havoc.

He was seen consoling victims and helping them move their belongings to safer places.

Residents are urging for immediate relief support to rebuild their lives.
