Pupils of Bawa Akura Primary School in the Krachi East municipality of the Oti Region have been forced to sit in sand to learn due to lack of chairs in the school.
A visit to the school by Adom FM’s Mubarak Yakubu revealed that there were more than 200 pupils from kindergarten to class six who had no school desks and had resorted to sitting in sand during instructional hours.
In an interview with Adom News, the assistant headmaster of the school, Mr Attah Raymond said the situation is really affecting teaching and learning in the school.
“I was very discouraged when I was posted to this school, but I endured. Our teachers, when posted to the school, don’t attend classes because they don’t even have chairs to sit on in the course of the teaching or after teaching. We have petitioned the Municipal Assembly but we are yet to hear from them,” he narrated.
A class five teacher, Kennedy Duffour, who registered his displeasure, said the teachers are always saddened by the deplorable nature of the classrooms and the lack of chairs.
“There is no way we would be exempted when going to write Basic Education Certificate Examination or be given any special care even though we are struggling here, so the government should come quickly to assist us,” he appealed.
Some of the pupils also complained about how they dress very neatly to school, but go home with dirty clothes after classes.
“We will appeal to the government, civil organisations and individuals who can support us to come to our aid. We need these desks to help in our education,” they cried out.
