Historic Flight Lands in Kumasi: Ethiopian Airlines makes inaugural direct Flight from London Gatwick

In a significant milestone for Ghana’s aviation industry, the first direct flight from London Gatwick International Airport to Kumasi Prempeh I International Airport touched down today, December 6, 2024. The flight, operated by the multi-award-winning Ethiopian Airlines, marks a major breakthrough in connecting the Ashanti Region to the global aviation network.

 

The historic event was witnessed by a gathering of dignitaries, including the Mayor of Kumasi, Sam Pyne, traditional chiefs, assembly members, and representatives from various media outlets. Journalists, bloggers, and traditional media stations were on hand to capture the moment and file reports.

 

However, the excitement was tempered by controversy on social media, where users accused the Ghana Airport Company of misleading the public about the availability of direct flights from Gatwick to Kumasi. Several individuals claimed that they had attempted to book flights but were unable to do so, casting doubt on the existence of a direct airlink between the two cities.

 

Despite this controversy, the arrival of Ethiopian Airlines’ inaugural direct flight from London Gatwick to Kumasi marks a significant step forward for the region’s economic development and tourism prospects. As Ghana continues to expand its aviation infrastructure, it is likely that more international carriers will follow Ethiopian Airlines’ lead, opening up new opportunities for trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
