Five people died in a fatal lorry crash at the Assakae junction on the Nkroful –Apremdo road, in the Effia Kwesimintsim Municipality of the Western Region, on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased, including a taxi-driver and two children, were pronounced dead shortly on arrival at the Jemimah Crentsil and Kwesimintsim Hospitals, whilst the two others died on the spot.
One other person, who was seriously injured, was currently on admission at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, police told the Ghanaian Times.
The suspect, a tipper truck driver, Nana Kwame Addison, was in police custody whilst the accident vehicles have been impounded at the Kwesimintsim Police station while investigations continued.
SHELLA NANA AMA interview with the Western Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic Transport Unit (MTTU), Chief Superintendent Richard Appiah, said truck driver, Nana Addison was driving man diesel tipper truck with registration number GE 8305 –Z, on the Nkroful road, from Aboadze heading towards Elubo.
On reaching a section of the road at Assakae junction, a driver in charge of an Opel Vectra taxi cab with registration number WR 4957 – 12, with three passengers and two children from Kwesimintim to Assakae, crossed the speeding tipper truck.
Chief Sup Appiah said, the tipper truck in the process ran into the taxi- cab with all the passengers on board sustaining serious injuries.
“They were rushed to the hospitals, but, five pronounced dead.” he confirmed.
