Phone snatchers escape death after vehicle crashes into ditch at Ajumako

A group of suspected phone snatchers narrowly escaped death after their vehicle was involved in an accident and plunged into a ditch at Ajumako in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District of the Central Region.
Information gathered by GHOne News’ Yaw Boagyan revealed that the suspects, numbering about five, had been terrorizing a community within the district, snatching mobile phones, bags, and money from unsuspecting victims.
The most recent incident occurred at Ajumako, opposite the government hospital, where the criminals forcibly took a newly posted nurse’s mobile phone, bag, and money as she was returning from work in the evening.
While fleeing the scene, the suspects got into an accident on the Ajumako-Nkwantanum road when their private car, registered CR-1784-12, crashed into an electricity pole and veered into a ditch.
However, after the accident, the suspects managed to escape from the vehicle and were nowhere to be found at the time of filing this report.
Speaking to GHOne News, the victim, a newly posted nurse, recounted that she was on her way home from work when the suspects approached her. They claimed she had a spiritual affliction and offered to help her overcome it.
Taken aback by their claim, she decided to listen, only for them to snatch her phone, bag, and an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing.
She quickly called for help, prompting some Good Samaritans to chase the criminals on a motorcycle. However, upon catching up with them, they discovered that the suspects had already been involved in an accident.
Some eyewitnesses revealed in an interview that they had spotted the vehicle earlier and decided to pursue it.
Interestingly, the suspects initially identified themselves as pastors heading for a crusade, not knowing they were criminals.
Upon searching the crashed vehicle, authorities discovered school bags, numerous mobile phones, clothes, shoes, food, voter ID cards bearing names suspected to be from the Volta Region, and an empty wallet.
Angry residents, infuriated by the snatchers’ actions, attempted to set the vehicle ablaze. However, police officers arrived in time to prevent them from doing so and brought the situation under control.
The case has since been reported to the Ajumako Hospital for further investigation.
Meanwhile, no arrests have been made so far.
