Pay us or else… BECE invigilators tell gov’t
Some exam invigilators in the Agotime Ziope District of the Volta Region have threatened to withdraw their services in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) unless they are paid.
They say the Ghana Education Service (GES) has defaulted in paying their allowances for two years, hence their resolve not to make their services available for subsequent papers should their cry fall on deaf ears.
One of the aggrieved invigilators, Godwin Kaku, disclosed this to Joy News during an inspection tour by the District Chief Executive.
“We have been invigilating for 2015, 2016 and 2017 and [our allowances for] 2015 was paid early part of last month [May 2018]…” he said.
Mr Kaku emphasized that the allowances for 2016 and 2017 haven’t been paid despite assurances from the authorities adding, unless they get the monies, they would be forced to withdraw their services.
“…last year when we were about to write the exam we took the issue to the head and they promised to pay but that didn’t happen. So we are saying that if they cannot pay us our money then the rest of the papers will not be invigilated,” he said.
Meanwhile, police in the Northern Region are still keeping in custody the proprietor of the Prince of Peace Junior High School after he was picked up Monday over claims he failed to register some 76 pupils for the 2018 BECE.
Sulemana Saeed allegedly collected fees from the students but on the day of their first paper, the students were denied access to the exam centre.
The exams started Monday with over 500,000 candidates sitting for the nine papers across the country.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has sent goodwill messages to all the candidates, urging them to desist from malpractices and anticipate the Free SHS they will enjoy.
