Parliament Dismisses “Political Prostitute” Petition Against Supreme Court Nominee Justice Ackaah-Boafo

The path has been cleared for Justice Kweku T. Ackaah-Boafo to face Parliament’s Appointments Committee today, Friday, June 20, 2025, after a controversial petition describing him as a “political prostitute” was dismissed.
The petition, lodged by Anthony Kwabenya Rau, an individual identifying as an international human rights activist, had threatened to derail the Supreme Court nominee’s vetting process. Rau’s claims accused the Court of Appeal judge of judicial bias, misconduct, and political opportunism.
In his allegations, Rau asserted that Justice Ackaah-Boafo was politically compromised, stating, “I see the above said person as a political prostitute judge. After serving me the judgement in November 2019, he was immediately appointed by the NPP government to the Court of Appeal. After giving judgement on Hon. Ato Forson, he is now being promoted by the NDC to the Supreme Court.”
The vetting, initially paused due to Rau’s eleventh-hour submission, saw the Appointments Committee refer the complaint to Speaker Alban Bagbin for review. However, after careful consideration, Parliament found no sufficient grounds to pursue the claims and ultimately dismissed the petition as lacking merit.
Among the numerous accusations, Rau alleged that Justice Ackaah-Boafo used insulting and inappropriate language during proceedings at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) court. He claimed the judge belittled him, referring to him as a “so-called ‘Messiah’ international human rights activist” and questioning his authority to represent clients in Ghana.
Rau further alleged that the judge’s written judgment contained personal attacks and went on to describe Justice Ackaah-Boafo as “arrogant, biased, power-drunk, an abuser of human rights, and supportive of corruption.” The petition also questioned the nominee’s cultural alignment, citing his Canadian background and claiming he disrespected Ghanaian traditions, particularly regarding age and seniority.
Additionally, the petition attempted to link Justice Ackaah-Boafo’s career progression directly to political favoritism, suggesting that his judicial decisions were rewarded by both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) governments.
Despite the serious tone of the petition, parliamentary sources close to the vetting process have consistently dismissed the claims as unfounded.
With the petition now officially thrown out, the Appointments Committee has confirmed that Justice Ackaah-Boafo’s vetting will proceed as scheduled. Justice Ackaah-Boafo, who has served across various judicial capacities including the High Court and Court of Appeal benches, is the final nominee put forward by President John Dramani Mahama for consideration to the Supreme Court.
