One Suspect Killed, 4 on the Run after police Clash with robbers on Kumasi-Bibiani Road

A suspected armed robbery attempt on the Kumasi-Bibiani Highway ended in violence on the evening of June 2, 2025, as police engaged in a fierce gun battle with five suspects, resulting in the death of one and the escape of four others.
According to a report by DailyGuideNetwork.com and confirmed by the Ashanti Regional Police, the confrontation occurred around 7:30 p.m., when the suspects, armed and dangerous, attempted to rob two passenger vehicles at gunpoint. Their operation was thwarted by the swift intervention of the police patrol team, leading to a heavy exchange of gunfire.
“Upon sighting the police, the suspects armed with the pump action gun, opened fire on the patrol team,” said DSP Godwin Ahianyo, spokesperson for the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Department.
The officers returned fire, fatally wounding one suspect who was later pronounced dead at the Afari Government Hospital. The body has since been deposited in the hospital morgue for preservation and further investigations.
Four Suspects Still at Large
While one suspect was killed during the operation, four others managed to flee the scene. However, authorities believe that some or all of them may have sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation.
As a result, the police are calling on the public and health facilities to remain vigilant. Medical practitioners across the Ashanti and Western North Regions are being asked to report any persons seeking treatment for gunshot wounds to the nearest police station.
“The Police are, therefore, appealing to all medical facilities and practitioners to be on the lookout and report any persons presenting with gunshot injuries,” DSP Ahianyo emphasized.
Public Vigilance Urged
The police are also urging citizens, particularly those living along the Kumasi-Bibiani corridor and nearby towns, to report suspicious individuals or activities.
“These suspects are armed and dangerous. We encourage the public to cooperate with law enforcement as we continue efforts to locate and apprehend the remaining criminals,” added DSP Ahianyo.
He further praised the Nkawie Police Patrol Team for their bravery and professionalism in what could have easily escalated into a tragic situation involving innocent civilians.
A Recurring Threat
Highway robberies remain a significant security concern in Ghana, especially on remote or poorly lit routes like Kumasi-Bibiani, where criminal groups often target travelers during the early evening hours. This latest incident highlights both the ongoing threat posed by armed criminals and the importance of increased highway surveillance and rapid police response.
The Ghana Police Service continues to assure the public that it is committed to protecting life and property, but it also emphasizes the need for community involvement in crime prevention.
