Nico Williams handed number 10 jersey at Athletic Bilbao amid Barcelona interest

European champion Nico Williams will wear the number 10 jersey for Athletic Bilbao in the upcoming season.

Despite being a target for Barcelona, Williams appears set for another season at Bilbao, even with reports suggesting a potential move to the Catalan giants.

Williams, the younger brother of Ghanaian forward Inaki Williams, returned to training last week after an extended break following his participation in the European Championship in Germany.

On Monday, the winger was presented with the number 10 jersey, previously worn by club legend Iker Muniain. Williams Jr will now switch from his number 11 shirt to the iconic number.

“I’m proud to get the shirt number 10 from Muniain and to make history as he did,” he said.

Meanwhile, Barcelona may end their pursuit of the forward after failing to reach a deal, with the transfer window nearing its close.

Williams Jr has been a standout player at San Mames since making his senior debut, helping the Rojiblancos win their first Copa del Rey title in 40 years.

He also scored in the 2-1 victory over England as Spain secured their fourth European Championship title.
