The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has revealed its plans to support Ghana’s creative arts industry. According to Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s National Communication Officer, the party intends to partner with the media to establish a TV station dedicated to promoting Ghanaian movies, music, fashion, and other creative works.
Speaking on United Television’s (UTV) “United Showbiz” program, hosted by Empress Gifty, Gyamfi explained that the TV station will not only promote Ghanaian creative works but also pay royalties to every individual involved. This move is aimed at helping the creative art industry, which has been facing numerous challenges.
However, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, questioned the need for a new TV station when the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) could be used to promote Ghanaian music. A-Plus also criticized the NDC for selling the Ghana Film Company, which was built by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah after Ghana gained independence.
In response, Gyamfi clarified that the GBC is a state-owned company, but the government does not have control over its programming timeline. He also assured that the new TV station will be a free-to-air channel.
The discussion also touched on the issue of government sponsorship for events organized during the December festive season. Arnold Asamoah Baido claimed that 80% of such events are sponsored by the government, but Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, also known as Bullgod, disputed this claim.
Gyamfi concluded by saying that he would submit all the concerns raised by A-Plus to the NDC’s manifesto committee for consideration. This move demonstrates the NDC’s commitment to listening to the concerns of stakeholders in the creative arts industry and working towards finding solutions to support the industry’s growth.
