NDC Parliamentary Candidate arrested for saying ‘you’re the chairman and so what?”
Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Effutu Constituency, James Kofi Annan, has been arrested, and is before the District Magistrate Court, Winneba, for saying that:” you are the chairman of the committee and so what? You are the reason why we are not enjoying peace in Winneba” to Samuel Asiedu Okanta, while Mr Okanta was chairing a voter challenge committee meeting at Latter Day Saints registration centre at Winneba.
For saying the above words to the chairman, Mr James Kofi Annan has been accused of using abusive words that can provoke the breach of peace or whereby a breach of the peace is likely to be occasioned and subsequently arrested and put before court.
Details are that while the complainant was chairing the meeting, Mr Annan walked into the meeting and asked why the meeting was ongoing without the NDC representative but the chairman. The chairman asked that his grievances be channeled to him. But Mr Annan retorted with the above quote. He is now in court for attempting to breach the peace of the area with his pronouncements.
Many on social media, upon seeing the court documents, have wondered how Mr Annan’s pronouncements could lead to his arrest and prosecution.
