NDC fights EC boss over new Voters Register (Audio)

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described as worrying the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to compile a new Voters Register for the 2020 elections.

According to the EC, the decision was made at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Wednesday, March 27, 2019.

The EC in a statement after the meeting said, “the Commission will compile a new Voters Register ahead of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.”

The EC also said it is preparing a draft Constitutional Instrument (CI) to assess and guide the financial positions of the various political parties.

The CI will seek to regulate and streamline the format of financial returns and audited accounts of the political parties.

But, the NDC has vowed to resist any attempt by the EC to introduce a new register for the 2020 general election without proper consultation.

Director of Elections of the NDC, Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah on Adom FMs morning show ‘Dwaso Nsem’ Thursday said there was no deliberation on the compilation of the Voters Register at the IPAC meeting, therefore, the party would not accept it.

He said the NDC is not against the compilation of the Voters Register, but that particular issue was not related to the agenda at the meeting and wondered why the EC chair made it public.

“We are shocked at EC’s posture on the Voters Register. Nothing like that came up at the IPAC meeting. We discussed a lot of issues and that matter on Voters Register was said by the EC boss only in passing, so we believe they smuggled that point in it to throw dust in the public,” he said.

He argued that the compilation of the Voters Register is a major and sensitive issue and should be given much attention which must involve major stakeholders.

He said the EC boss, Mrs Jean Adukwei Mensa is only creating unnecessary suspicion for herself and must be condemned.

He said the NDC will issue a statement to that effect.
