National Volunteer Day scheduled for September 21
The GhanaThink Foundation has encouraged the youth of the country to make themselves available for nation-building on National Volunteer Day (NVDay), instituted by the foundation on Friday, 21 September 2018.
Started in 2013, the National Volunteer Day seeks to help people, through volunteerism, to build their skills – especially soft skills while gaining experience, networking and solving societal problems, among others.
The day also marks Founders’ Day, instituted by late former President John Evans Atta Mills, as a day to remember the founders of Ghana – men and women who did great things for Ghana.
On 21 September, the group will embark on several activities, including skills training programmes, clean-up exercises, painting of schools, painting of zebra crossings, conducting reading clinics, donating blood, tutoring, visiting orphanages and making donations to them; improving infrastructure, conducting health screening and giving talks; training the youth in ICT and mentoring events.
Volunteering through NVDay has enabled several people to gain leadership skills, work as a team, and develop other skills because they are given opportunities to learn on the job.
Director of the GhanaThink Foundation, Ato Ulzen-Appiah, told ClassFMonline.com that NVDay encourages as many people in Ghana to volunteer their time and resources to make Ghana better.
“Around 21 September 2018, National Volunteer Day brings more volunteering opportunities. People in Ghana must take advantage of NVDay to add more value to our lives, continue to build our track records that would make our professional lives much easier,” he added.
The GhanaThink Foundation is run by more than 100 volunteer members.
Various teams of GhanaThink members in different towns support localised activities.
Many people have found internships and jobs from networking at ‘Volunteer in Ghana’ activities.
Individuals who cannot participate can also donate financially to support the programme.
