NAIMOS Raids Aboso, Arrests Dozens at Notorious ‘Gangway’ Galamsey Hideout

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has carried out a major operation in Aboso, a community in Ghana’s Western Region, leading to the arrest of several individuals involved in illegal mining (galamsey) and related criminal activities.
The raid, which took place at the notorious ‘Gangway’ hideout, is part of NAIMOS’s intensified nationwide campaign against illegal mining operations that continue to devastate Ghana’s environment and river bodies.
According to officials, the hideout had become a haven for galamsey operators, gamblers, and drug users who allegedly used the area as a base for carrying out unlawful mining activities in nearby forest reserves. During the operation, several suspects were apprehended, and mining tools, machinery, and other items were confiscated.
NAIMOS said the operation was aimed at dismantling organized networks that are sustaining illegal mining in the region. “The fight against galamsey requires persistence and coordination, and we are determined to bring every illegal miner to justice,” an official said.
Community members have welcomed the raid, praising the authorities for taking decisive action against the illegal activities that have long threatened their lands and water sources. Many residents expressed relief, noting that the Gangway area had been a source of insecurity and environmental destruction for years.
The suspects are expected to be handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution. NAIMOS also confirmed that similar operations are being planned across other illegal mining hotspots in the Western and Ashanti regions.
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to ending galamsey once and for all, emphasizing that no individual or group will be spared if found engaging in unlawful mining activities.
