The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has warned residents living around the Bagre Dam to adopt safety measures ahead of the dam’s excess water spillage.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Class FM, monitored by Adomonline.com, the Northern Regional Director of NADMO, Alhaji Abdallah Hindu disclosed that the water spillage coupled with heavy rainfall may cause havoc in some areas.

“The Bagre Dam is increasingly getting to its full capacity and could be spilled any time soon and the water level in the dam has risen by 48 per cent this year but was 20 per cent as of the same period in 2018.

“That is so alarming and very soon we will like to spill the dam and if we have internal rains too, then that means there would be floods everywhere,” he warned.

Alhaji Hindu urged residents around the river banks and those with their farms in flood-prone areas to be cautious in protecting their farmlands and property or move to safer areas.

“We will be organising series of public lectures and sensitisation programmes in the coming days but don’t think of bad things happening or disasters but the problem is, we cannot deceive nature. When it happens that way, there is nothing NADMO can do; the only thing is for us to sympathise with you, take assessment report and the little relief items wouldn’t be enough,” he said.
