My efforts saved Korle-Bu oxygen plant ¢100K – Dr Anyaah touts achievements

The outgoing Acting CEO of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has touted his achievements saying the hospital is now saving between ¢80,000 and ¢100,000 by repairing its own oxygen plant.

Dr Felix Anyaah explained that during his tenure, he ensured that the hospital’s broken-down plant was restored and supply oxygen to all clinical departments.

“Since 2017, the hospital’s plant has been running smoothly and generating piped oxygen to the theatres and wards. Bottled cylinders are also being filled at the plant supplied to areas that do not have a direct connection,” he listed as one of his feats.

The owner of Holy Trinity Hospital and Spa who was appointed in May 2017 was speaking at a ceremony Monday, where he handed over to the administration of the hospital to the Director of Medical Affairs Dr Samuel Asiamah.

Dismissal

The reasons for the termination of his appointment are not immediately known, although his contract cancellation comes in the wake of seeming waves of dismissal of CEOs of state agencies by the President.

Already, the Managing Director of the Bulk Oil and Storage Transport (BOST), Alfred Obeng Boateng; CEO of Ghana Export Promotion Authority, Gifty Klenam; MD of the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority (GHAPOHA), Paul Ansah have all been sacked by President Akufo-Addo last Wednesday.

These dismissals generated a wave of agitations among some workers at the various state institutions with workers of KBTH joining the fray to register their displeasure.

According to the aggrieved Korle Bu workers, Dr Anyaah brought remarkable changes at the hospital so they deserved some explanation.

“He is a loving CEO and unlike others, we have had in the past, Dr Anyaa has the interest of the hospital at heart and is not looting our coffers like some of his predecessors,” one of them said.

“Dr Anyaa has brought stability and championed development at Korle Bu so we do not understand why he has been given the boot,” another worker said.

Achievements

During his administration, Dr Anyaah who was voted the overall best CEO (private/public sector) last year, got the hospital a new executive wing which contained an invitro fertilization centre as well as DNA and general lab services.

Also, the Accident and Emergency centre has also had a facelift in terms of equipment and logistics. The new facility with a bed capacity of 80 will be opened to the public on July 15 this year.

The general outlook of KBTH has changed as there is repainting of the entire blocks starting with the Child Health Department, the lighting system has also improved with the streets well-lit at night.

Speaking at the event, Dr Anyaah said the approach he took in managing the facility was to make it the centre for medical tourism in Africa.

Way forward

“I had to completely digitalise our operations, billings, revenue system and bed management but if we had a software that looks at maintenance and can advise the engineers about what and when an action has to be done, it will uplift the facility,” he said.

According to him, with a maintenance plan in place, it will overcome the Ghanaian challenge of maintenance to keep equipment in good order.

“At some point, I had to use my own money to put some facilities in order, so let’s get motivated to enhance our service and pay ourselves well,” he urged the staff.

Dr Anyaah believes if the hospital repositions itself, it can take advantage and be the number one centre for medical tourism in the sub-region.

He charged the staff to work in harmony to help improve the standard of service delivery to achieve this goal.
