Morocco has reportedly decided to honour US President Donald Trump by naming one of the country’s biggest infrastructure projects after him, in a move that has attracted international attention.
Trump himself announced the development in July, thanking Morocco’s King Mohammed VI for what he described as a great honour. The highway in question is the 1,055-kilometre Tiznit–Dakhla Expressway, a major road linking southern Morocco with Dakhla in Western Sahara.
The reported tribute has been described as another indication of the increasingly close relationship between Morocco and the United States.
The massive highway stretches along Morocco’s Atlantic corridor, connecting areas including Tiznit, Guelmim, Tan-Tan, Laayoune and Dakhla. It is expected to play an important role in Morocco’s plans to improve transport, trade and economic activity in its southern regions.
Trump expressed his appreciation for the gesture and said he hoped to travel the full length of the highway in the future.
The naming is particularly significant because of Trump’s foreign-policy decision in 2020 to recognise Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, a disputed territory that has remained at the centre of a long-running regional conflict. Morocco has subsequently received growing international support for its position on the territory.
