Meet the two female lawyers on the verge of possible history in GBA’s top hierarchy

Two leading female lawyers have made history by contesting for top leadership positions in the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).

Efua Ghartey and Victoria Barth are the first women to contest for president and vice president in the association’s pending elections, slated for September 11, 2024, according to a report by asaaseradio.com.

If elected, the two would break the GBA’s previous male-dominated leadership structure and mark a pivotal point in the history of the Association.

Efua Ghartey, a seasoned lawyer with close to 30 years standing at the Bar, is vying for the position of National President.

This would be the third time she is contesting for the position, as she lost narrowly to Tony Forson, the immediate past president of the GBA, and Yaw Boafo, the current National President, with razor-thin margins of 67 and 65 votes, respectively, in her previous attempts.

Victoria Barth, another highly accomplished legal professional, is also vying for National Vice-President of the GBA.

She is known for her stellar academic career at the Ghana School of Law, where she has mentored many young lawyers.

Her candidacy has garnered significant support, particularly among younger members of the Bar, the report said.

She was also a key part of the legal team that represented President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the 2021 election petition.

The two women are part of hundreds of lawyers who have gathered in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region, for the 2024 Annual General Conference of the Ghana Bar Association.

The conference is a week-long one and will be culminated with the election of new executives for the organization.
