NDC youth finally apologise over anti-Ashanti remarks following 24-hour ultimatum by Mamponghene
The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Asante Mampong has formally extended an apology to the Mampong Traditional Council and the Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, in response to anti-Ashanti comments made by some members of the party’s youth wing.
This gesture follows a 24-hour ultimatum issued by the Mamponghene, demanding a retraction of the offensive remarks, which were made during a campaign opposing the potential nomination of Esther Dwomoh, an Ashanti, by former President John Dramani Mahama for the position of Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) in the area.
In response to the incident, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II strongly condemned the actions of the individuals involved, warning that appropriate measures would be taken against them for their derogatory remarks.
“Advise those in the NDC who put up the despicable act. They have until tomorrow afternoon… If not, we shall shake things up for them to know that we wield the power and the entire jurisdiction,” Daasebre Osei Bonsu fumed.
In line with this, party executives have expressed deep remorse over the incident, clarifying that the remarks made were not intentional and do not reflect the values or stance of the party.
“A few days ago, some remarks made by members of our party caused disgrace and embarrassment to the Asante Mampong Traditional Council and the Mamponghene. As party leaders, we have reflected on our actions and wrongdoings and wish to render an apology to the Traditional Council, the people of Asanteman, Mampong, and all Ghanaians,” one of the party executives said in a video sighted by GhanaWeb.
The NDC stated that they have taken time to reflect on their actions and fully acknowledge the wrongdoing, recognising how the remarks could potentially disrupt the longstanding peaceful coexistence between the Traditional Council and political parties in the region.
They have therefore called for calm among all factions.
“In the video in question, while our conversations had a particular intent, certain statements made were inappropriate and unfortunate, leading to the current backlash. The individuals who made those remarks are members of the party and have since expressed their remorse and apologised,” the party stated.
The executive added, “We ask for calm, as we are all peace-loving citizens. The people of Asante Mampong have consistently demonstrated tolerance and goodwill towards all political parties, and we cherish that spirit of unity. We respectfully urge that the peaceful coexistence among all parties be maintained for the continued harmony and development of our community.”
