Meet the first Ashanti King to be photographed

Ashanti King, Nana Kwaku Dua II (a.k.a Nana Agyeman Kofi) with his “Wirempe” stool and entourage in Kumasi, Ghana. 1884

Nana Kwaku Dua II was the first Asantehene (Ashanti King) to be photographed.

He reigned: 28 April 1884 – 11 June 1884 (Ashanti civil war era, 1883-1888)

WIREMPE STOOL: It’s a symbol of office which is blackened, place in a stool room whenever a monarch is no more.
