Mathias Pogba sentenced to prison for extortion attempt against brother Paul Pogba

A Paris court has sentenced Mathias Pogba, the brother of French footballer Paul Pogba, to three years in prison, with two years suspended, after convicting him in a high-profile extortion case.

Mathias will serve one year of the sentence with an electronic bracelet rather than in prison.

The court also imposed a 20,000-euro fine for his role in attempting to extort 13 million euros (US$13.5 million) from Paul Pogba in 2022, pressuring the player, his family, and business contacts.

The case, which shocked the French football community, involved six men close to Paul Pogba, including three childhood friends and his own brother.

The other defendants received sentences ranging from 20,000 to 40,000 euros in fines, with prison terms of up to eight years.

Mathias Pogba’s lawyer plans to appeal, calling the ruling “extremely harsh.”
