Many Ghanaians still suffering – Akufo-Addo reminds cabinet

President Nana Akufo-Addo is reported to have constantly reminded his appointees, especially the cabinet ministers that all is not well with the country yet and urged them to work for the betterment of the ordinary Ghanaian.

Finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, disclosed this at the Mid-Year Budget Review presentation in Parliament that the president acknowledges that “many Ghanaians are still suffering” despite what the government has done so far.

Mr. Ofori-Atta on Monday, July 29, appeared before parliament seeking approval to spend more money than was approved in the 2019 budget in November 2018.

He is requesting to spend an extra GH¢6 billion in the budget review.

In doing so, the minister revealed how the President has always been hard on them as cabinet ministers to work in the interest of Ghanaians.

The latest plea from the president, the finance minister said was a reminder at the cabinet final discussion of the Mid-Year Budget Review.

“Just last week, as we discussed the details of this statement I am reading now, the President reminded us that, in spite of all that we have managed to achieve so far, too many Ghanaians are still suffering”, he said.

“He reminds us that we are certainly not there yet. That our efforts to confront poverty, fix our roads, provide community housing, support our farmers, protect the vulnerable, offer better conditions of service to our nurses, teachers, security officers, get businesses operating optimally, were being checked and that we should be bolder in taking steps that will offer us the fiscal space to improve the lives of those we lead, serve and obey”, he added.

He explained that all the measures being put in place are calculated and balanced, aimed at improving the lives of the Ghanaian.

The minister stressed the point that the Akufo-Addo-led government is one for the poor and the masses and that they may not “stand on rooftops and beat the propaganda drums high and loud”, but would “prefer to allow our actions to speak ”.
