Man jailed five years for attacking 102-year-old woman

A 27-year-old graphic designer who attacked a 102-year-old woman in his bid to rob her has been sentenced to five years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court.

Joel Mawuli Mensa, who was charged with causing harm pleaded guilty.

Mensa told the court that he thought that the old woman had money tied around her waistband.

The convict, however, denied another charge of attempting to commit crime.

The court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh sentenced him on the charge of causing harm, the court, however, ordered him to reappear on April 1, to answer the charge of attempt to commit crime.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Willian K. Boateng said the complainant Madam Leticia Osabukle resides at Teshie, whilst Mensah also lived in the same area and currently unemployed.

The Prosecution said on March 7, this year, Chief Inspector Boateng at about 1900 hours, Madam Osabukle went to a toilet, which is located in the same yard but a few meters from her room.

Prosecution said suddenly, Mensa pounced on the complainant and attempted to remove money tied around her waist.

The complainant shouted for help but Mensa covered her mouth.

Prosecution said Mensa pushed the complainant to the ground who then fractured her leg, he then sat on her to take out the supposed money.

He said Mensa not satisfied the convict picked a broken tile and attempted to harm the complainant.

The prosecution said a witness in the case who heard the complainant screaming rushed to the scene and rescued her, however, Mensa escaped by scaling the wall but left behind his sandals.

He said a report was made to the Police at Nungua where a medical report form was issued to the complainant to seek medical assistance.

The prosecution said the complainant was then admitted at the 37 Military Hospital and later discharged.
