Gov’t Assurance C’ttee to assess performance of Ministers

The Government’s Assurance Committee of Parliament is set to track the government’s promises within four ministerial sectors which include Special Development Initiatives, Energy, Railways and Education.

The Assurance Committee is mandated by the house to track promises made by government officials especially within the precincts of Parliament and hold them to account.

Speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of a training session for Parliamentary reporters in Ada, Chairman of the Committee, Yaw Frimpong Addo, said the Committee will use methods such as verification visits and public hearings to hold appointees to account for promises made to ensure that the government succeeds.

“We need to do this, because we just cannot sit in Accra and say that the Minister said he would do this and we will not go there to see whether it has been done or not, this is also to get evidence on the ground and question the ministers based on that,” he said.

Mr. Yaw Frimpong Addo stated that the main objective of the committee is to help the President succeed.

In February, the Chairman, Mr.Yaw Frimpong Addo, mentioned that the committee will focus primarily on government’s flagship programs.

He said programs such as Planting for Food and Jobs as well as the Free SHS program will be critically assessed.

He told Citi News that “we are paying verification visits to some selected regions. We are going to select some ministries and deal with flagship projects and programs. This year we are going to pursue agriculture especially because of Planting for Food and Jobs. [Also] Free SHS, Mines, and Energy issues because of galamsey issues,” he said.
