President John Dramani Mahama is set to return to the Kotoka International Airport on Thursday, August 27, 2026, to cut sod for a major new infrastructure project designed to transform parking, hospitality, retail and entertainment facilities at the airport.
The proposed development, described as a multi-tiered, multi-purpose car park and airport hotels complex, is expected to introduce a range of modern facilities to improve the experience of travellers, visitors and airport users.
The project forms part of President Mahama’s broader record of infrastructure development, with his administration previously associated with major projects including Terminal 3 at the Accra International Airport, the MPS Terminal at the Tema Harbour and funding for the Tema-Mpakadan Railway Project.
The new airport complex is expected to feature a seven-storey car park with more than 2,000 parking spaces. The facility is intended to provide significantly expanded parking capacity while making it easier for passengers, airport workers, visitors and other users to access the airport.
Another major component of the development will be the inclusion of two hotels. The hotels are expected to provide accommodation for travellers and other visitors who require convenient access to the airport.
The project will also include a pedestrian connector linking the new complex to the airport terminal. Such a connection is expected to make movement between the parking, hotel and terminal facilities more convenient for passengers and visitors.
Beyond parking and accommodation, the proposed development will incorporate a shopping mall. The mall is expected to contain a food court, retail spaces and office spaces available for rental.
The inclusion of commercial facilities means the complex is expected to serve purposes beyond being a parking facility. It could become a destination where travellers and members of the public can access restaurants, shops and business facilities while at the airport.
Entertainment is also included in the plans, with a sky lounge forming part of the proposed development. The facility is expected to provide a space for relaxation and entertainment while offering users a different experience within the airport environment.
One of the more distinctive features planned for the complex is a sky observatory. The observatory is expected to provide aircraft viewing opportunities, allowing visitors to watch aircraft land and take off from the airport.
Aircraft viewing could become an additional attraction for visitors and aviation enthusiasts, while also providing a recreational component to the development.
The sod-cutting ceremony on Thursday, August 27, will formally mark the beginning of the project and is expected to highlight the government’s plans for further development of infrastructure around Ghana’s main international airport.
The project adds to a number of major infrastructure investments associated with President Mahama’s tenure. Terminal 3 at Kotoka International Airport significantly expanded the airport’s passenger-handling infrastructure, while the MPS Terminal at Tema Harbour was developed as a major modern container terminal.
The Tema-Mpakadan Railway Project has also been identified among major infrastructure initiatives supported during Mahama’s administration.
With the new airport complex, the focus is expected to extend beyond transportation infrastructure to hospitality, commerce and entertainment.
If completed as planned, the multi-purpose facility could provide additional parking capacity while creating new spaces for hotels, businesses, retail outlets and leisure activities.
The development is therefore expected to contribute to the ongoing transformation of the Accra International Airport area and provide travellers with a wider range of services and facilities in one location.
President Mahama’s sod-cutting ceremony on August 27 is expected to officially set the project in motion, with attention likely to turn to its implementation and eventual completion.
