Mahama commissioned Komenda Sugar Factory for votes not jobs – NPP

The Central Regional Communication Director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Robert Amissah has revealed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured the Komenda constituency seat because of the Komenda Sugar Factory.

The Komenda Sugar Factory was first established in the 1960s by Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah which was part of his economic policy for industrialization but collapsed.

It was later revamped in May 2016 by the erstwhile Mahama-led administration with a $35-million Indian government facility.

President Mahama at the inauguration said factory said it has a manufacturing appetite capable of producing 1,250 tonnes of sugar daily and also create about 7000 direct and indirect jobs.

But the factory was closed down in July 2016 after the sugar cane season petered off.

The president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his recent 4-day tour in the region says the government is in the process of finding a strategic investor to revive the “debt-ridden and idle” Komenda Sugar Factory.

Meanwhile, Robert Amissah speaking on Abusua Nkommo hosted by Kwame Adinkra MyNewsGh.com monitored said government is committed to revamping the Komenda Sugar Factory to create thousands of jobs to help reduce unemployment rate in the region and the country as well.

According to Robbert Amissah, then NDC government commissioned the uncompleted Komenda Sugar just to save the party from losing the Komenda Sugar but not to create jobs.

He added that NPP will sweep all the 23 seats in the region

Central Region has 23 parliamentary seats which NPP won 19 seats out of the 23 seats during the 2016 general elections.
